US Government Promises to Impose Visa Ban on Election Riggers

The US government has vowed to impose sanctions like visa restrictions, on politicians planning to interfere with the democratic processes or incite violence in the upcoming 2023 general elections.

The United Kingdom has also issued the same threat to Nigerian politicians, while warning them against violence to undermine the 2023 general elections.

Rolf Olson, the Political Counsellor at the United States Embassy in Nigeria, had given the United States warning, yesterday, November 21 in Abuja at the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Alumni Association Annual Seminar 2022 on: Promoting electoral integrity in Nigeria: Prospects and challenges.

Olson, who spoke on behalf of the United States Government, had supported the Independent National Electoral Commission’s decision to deploy the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System -BVAS, and electronic transmission of results, adding that it would make sure of the integrity of Nigerian elections.

Olson had then impressed on Nigerians that the United States government did not have a preferred candidate in mind, for the upcoming elections. But Olson noted that its interest was to see a credible election that would reflect the wishes of the Nigerian masses.
