Ije Akunyili has been appointed by AUS medical center, Jersey City Medical Center as the first black Chief Medical Officer of the hospital.
Dr. Akunyili is the daughter of a well-known Nigerian professor, Dora Akunyili.
Her appointment was announced in a statement released by the center via its website, on Thursday, January 12, declaring that Akunyili’s appointment took effect from January 2, 2023.
Her mother, Dora had been the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, in Nigeria from 2001 to 2008.
Dora died at a specialist cancer hospital in India on June 7, 2014, after a two-year
protracted battle with uterine cancer.
Andy Anderson, the MD, Executive Vice President, and Chief Medical and Quality
Officer for RWJ Barnabas Health said, “She will be a tremendous asset to our team.”
