The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has ordered its members to join the nationwide strike announced by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, (TUC) as from Tuesday, November 14 midnight.

ASUU had made this known via a circular released to its zonal coordinators and chairpersons and signed by Emmanuel Osodeke, the ASUU President.

The academic union said, “As an affiliate of NLC, all members of our union are hereby directed to join this action of NLC to protect the interest of Nigerian workers and the leadership of the union.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the NLC and the TUC wrote their affiliates ahead of the planned nationwide strike scheduled to begin midnight of Monday, November 13, 2023.

The organised labour had ordered its members to commence a nationwide strike as from 12 midnight on November 13 over the recent abuse by the Nigerian police and the Imo State government towards the NLC president, Me Joe Ajaero.

Festus Osifo, the President of TUC who addressed newsmen on Monday, November 13, had announced that the strike would remain until “ the government at all levels begin doing their responsibility(ies).”

The groups in a letter jointly signed by the NLC National Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja and the TUC Secretary General, Nuhu Toro have called for compliance.

The letter had urged the affiliates which include: the Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU), National Union of Electricity Employees, (NUEE), Nigeria Union of Teachers, (NUT), Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, (JSUN), Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, (ASUP), among others to issue circulars for total compliance.

The labour unions had also said that the circulars would be made either available to the National Secretariats or posted to the NEC and WC WhatsApp platforms.
