The attorney general of Venezuela, Tarek Saab, announced on Wednesday that his office has initiated a criminal inquiry into the recent opposition’s presidential primary.
The investigation is based on allegations of electoral misconduct, financial malpractice, and conspiracy. As part of the probe, two members of the organizing committee are set to be interviewed.
Despite the allegations, the opposition has maintained that the voting process, which led to Maria Corina Machado’s victory with over 2.3 million voters, was conducted transparently and fairly.
