Do you realize you can have relatively decent hygiene and yet battle body odors? It may seem strange to think that you follow a thorough hygiene regimen but still stink. Before you scrub your armpits in frustration, keep in mind that body odor is not solely determined by proper hygiene. Other elements, together with regular hygiene, help to minimize body odor. In this post, we will explore other elements and understand why this problem is so.

Reasons Beyond Hygiene That Can Cause Body Odor

Diet

Certain foods can have an effect on your body’s odor. This pertains to the compounds found in the foods you consume. When these foods are taken, they are absorbed into the bloodstream through digestion. These molecules can then circulate throughout the body, including the sweat glands. When you sweat, these molecules can be released via your pores, causing a body odor that resembles the fragrance of the foods you ate.

Sulfur compounds are present in foods such as garlic and onions. Sulfur compounds are typically odorless, but when heated, they emit a nasty and strong stench. Similarly, strong-smelling meals, such as spices and some types of fish, can cause body odors.

Medical condition

When blood sugar levels remain continuously high, as in uncontrolled diabetes, the body may try to eliminate extra glucose through urine and sweat.

As a result, sweat can emit a particular odor, which is frequently described as pleasant or fruity. Additionally, diabetics may be more susceptible to skin infections, which can add to body odor.

Hormones, on the other hand, play an important part in the regulation of several body activities, including sweat generation. During puberty, for example, hormonal changes can cause an increase in sweat production, which, when paired with bacteria on the skin, can result in a stronger body odor.

In simple terms, the underlying mechanisms in both cases are biological and chemical changes in the body that result in changes to the composition and odor of sweat.

Fabric and laundry

If you’re a woman, you’ve undoubtedly heard that wearing cotton underwear is beneficial to vaginal health. Ever wonder why it is the case? Sweat and bacteria are often trapped in synthetic materials like polyester, nylon, and silk clothing, which can worsen body odors. Now, this is applicable for both body clothing and undergarments. Therefore, it’s ideal to choose clothing that is breathable, such as cotton, as this will allow moisture to be absorbed and lessen the chance of odor development.

Also, you can try using the right laundry methods, such as washing your clothes in hot water to help get rid of bacteria, odor-causing compounds, and sweat.

Effectively. It is important to let your garments air dry properly because moisture can foster the growth of bacteria and the production of odors.

Sweat and bacteria

In actuality, sweat has no smell to it. Still, sweat can cause an unpleasant odor when it comes into contact with bacteria on the skin’s surface, especially in parts of the body that sweat a lot, such as the groin and armpits.

Conclusion

If body odor persists despite efforts to control it through basic hygiene and lifestyle changes, see a doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions that could be causing the problem. However, most people can regulate body odor with constant hygiene and understanding of the elements that can contribute to its development.
