Tanzania has cancelled the ban on night-time upcountry bus travel that was enforced several years ago.
According to the government, the removal of the ban had come about after deliberating on the views of stakeholders in the transport sector, and on improving infrastructure and security in the country.
Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa who announced the move in parliament, had revealed that the ban had been enforced in the 1990s after numerous incidences of road accidents and bus hijackings.
The relevant authorities have now been compelled to work out a procedure that will be followed by the owners and drivers of passenger buses who plan to convey passengers at nighttime.
The cancellation of the night transport ban is expected to see a rise in expansion in the transport sector, a development that has been highly welcomed by the association of Tanzanian bus owners who would are glad for the extra income that would be gotten from this.
It is expected that the Tanzanian government has also put measures in place to prevent history from happening to the sector.
