The unprecedented conviction and sentencing of Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years in prison is historic moment that will definitely be noted in history books for years to come. While his political allies, including President Donald Trump, are quick to label it a “witch hunt” and “political persecution,” the truth is far more significant.

This is the first time in Brazil’s history that a former leader has been held criminally accountable for attempting a coup to overturn an election. The verdict sends an very powerful message worldwide: no one is above the law, not even the man who once held the highest office.

The Brazilian Supreme Court’s ruling is a direct and forceful rejection of the authoritarianism that has shadowed the nation since its last military dictatorship. As Justice Alexandre de Moraes so pointedly put it, Brazil came dangerously close to returning to its 20-year dictatorship because a criminal organization led by a political group couldn’t accept losing an election.

Why Was Brazil's Former President Bolsonaro Sentenced to 27 Years in Prison?

The court’s meticulous dismantling of Bolsonaro’s conspiracy (which included not only inciting the January 8, 2023 riots but also plotting to assassinate rivals) really lays emphasis to the gravity of his actions. The conviction of seven of his co-conspirators, including high-ranking military officials, further reveals that this was not just the isolated action of a single man but also a widespread conspiracy at the highest levels of government.

Why It Matters

The challenges ahead seems insurmountable, especially with ongoing international pressure from allies like Donald Trump but the Brazilian Supreme Court must stand firm.

While Bolsonaro’s lawyers are expected to appeal, the court’s justices must resist external political pressure and uphold the verdict. This demonstrates that their authority is rooted in the constitution, not in political alliances.

Also, Brazil’s democracy must build resilience by implementing stronger checks and balances to prevent a single leader from accumulating too much power. This includes reinforcing the independence of its electoral courts and strengthening laws against misinformation and the use of state resources to undermine democracy.

Brazil’s historic decision against a former president stands as a powerful testament to the resilience of a nation that has struggled to shake off its authoritarian past. This is a moment that should be celebrated by all who believe that the ballot box, and not mere brute force, is the ultimate adjudicator of a nation’s future.
