Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, broke his silence on the Peoples Democratic Party’s internal issue on Saturday after the party’s presidential primaries and subsequent nomination of its vice presidential candidate.
Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor of Delta State, was chosen by PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar to contest against Wike, who many party leaders had predicted would win the vice-presidential nomination.
The governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, was one of many who objected to Atiku’s selection. The governor stated that Wike and other supporters of the Rivers governor for the PDP vice-presidential ticket position deserved a thorough justification from the party’s presidential candidate on his choice of running mate on June 29, 2022, during an appearance on Arise TV.
Ortom remarked that it was remarkable that Atiku could disregard the advice of 14 of the committee’s 17 members who recommended Wike as his running partner.
However, Atiku stated that he selected the candidates he believed could deliver from those who were presented to him in an exclusive interview with Arise TV that was broadcast Friday morning.
He added that Wike wasn’t rejected and he only chose capable candidates.
However, Wike who wrote using his official Twitter handle @GovWike stated that he will soon remark on recent events in the party in his first response to the controversy after Okowa’s emergence on Saturday.
“I will speak soon and Nigerians will know the actual truth of all that has transpired in the PDP in recent times,” the Rivers State governor said.
