The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused the opposition coalition of chasing personal interests instead of fighting for Nigerians, he said the coalition only wants to satisfy their “stomachs,” not the people.
Speaking during a thanksgiving service on Sunday in Abuja, Wike slammed the opposition leaders. He said their repeated party defections show they lack true commitment to the country.
Wike stated, “In 1999, you were in this party. In 2006, you moved to another. In 2014, you jumped again. Now in 2025, you have switched again. To rescue who? You only want to rescue your stomachs, not Nigerians.”
He said Nigerians should not be fooled by politicians who always jump from one party to another for their selfish reasons.
Wike Slams Opposition Coalition For Past Failures
Wike also criticised some opposition leaders for failing to deliver when they were in office. He questioned their achievements and described their actions as hypocritical.
He mocked Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, saying Obi never conducted local government elections during his time as governor.
Wike said, “You shout about democracy, but for eight years as governor, you refused to hold local government elections. You were the governor and the chairman of the councils.”
He also targeted former Senate presidents and ex-ministers in the coalition, asking why they failed to bring development to their hometowns after many years in power.
“You were Senate President for eight years, yet you couldn’t provide good roads in your own local government. But now, you want to rescue Nigeria? Rescue what?” he asked.
Wike Slams Opposition Coalition Over Nigeria’s Problems
Wike blamed the country’s challenges on some of the same opposition leaders now claiming to offer solutions. He accused them of causing Nigeria’s economic and social problems.
He said, “For eight years as Minister of Transportation, you borrowed heavily, leaving Nigerians with huge debts. Now you say Nigerians are angry. Yes, they are angry with you.”
Wike also condemned the poor services under past ministers, especially the delays in getting passports. He pointed out that new leadership had already made improvements.
“You were the Interior Minister, yet people waited months for passports. Now, within hours, passports are issued under a new leader. What did you achieve?” he asked.
He called on Nigerians to ignore the coalition, saying their time in power had passed.
“All I ask is for Nigerians to be patient and pray for President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Those who failed before will not get another chance,” Wike said.
Bottom Line
Wike Slams Opposition Coalition, Says It’s About ‘Stomachs Not Nigerians.’ His words clearly accuse opposition leaders of focusing on personal gain instead of the country’s welfare. Wike insists they cannot deceive Nigerians anymore with their recycled promises.
