Wrexham hitman Josh Windass has called for the Championship play-offs to be restarted completely in the wake of Southampton being expelled from the competition over a series of spying allegations.

The Saints were excluded from the Championship play-offs on Tuesday after admitting to three charges of spying on opposition training sessions, the most serious of which related to Boro, the side they had just beaten to earn a semi-final against the Yorkshiremen.

The club has appealed the decision, an arbitration hearing is to take place on Thursday, and have also been slapped with a four-point deduction for the next campaign.

Writing on his Instagram page, Wrexham’s frontman said: “This Southampton story is one of the maddest that I have seen. Why isn’t the play-offs starting again with the other four teams?”

Middlesbrough and Hull City will now compete in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Saturday after the ban on Southampton’s disqualification was upheld on Thursday.

The EFL has also admitted that spying was involved in clashes with Oxford and Ipswich back in December and April, respectively. This would mean a count of three for each. This came after Tonda Eckert’s appointment as head coach.

There will, however, be a slight delay in the kick-off of the play-off final until Thursday’s hearing.
