A tragic fire has claimed the lives of a man, his wife, and their grandson in Ibadan, Oyo State. The incident, which unfolded at 3:46 PM on Friday in the Ori-Eru area of Idikan, has left many confused, as the city grapples with yet another heartbreaking event in quick succession.
According to CSP Olaniyan Jibola of the Mapo Division, the fire broke out in a six-room residential building. The victims reportedly lit a naked fire to warm their room due to the cold weather, a decision that turned deadly. Three lifeless bodies were recovered, while five others were rescued alive from the burning structure.
And yes, it’s Ibadan again. Just days ago, we were mourning the tragic stampede that killed over 35 people. Now, another sad story to add to the city’s growing list of tragedies. When will this cycle of sorrow end?
The police confirmed that the fire didn’t affect the ground floor or nearby properties, but that’s cold comfort for those who’ve lost loved ones. Bringing the situation under control required assistance from Amotekun officials, led by Gbenga Akinyemi from the North West Division.
While Ibadan mourns once more, how many more preventable tragedies must we endure before basic safety becomes a priority?
