Zamalek won their fifth TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup in dramatic fashion on Friday night when they beat their long-time arch-rivals Al Ahly 4-3 on penalties, after the match had ended 1-1 following extra time, at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh.

Al Ahly took the lead with just about five minutes before halftime, through a Wessam Abou Ali penalty in the 44th minute after VAR confirmed a foul by Zamalek’s Hamza Mathlouthi on Akram Tawfik. Zamalek responded in the second half as substitute Naser Mansy scored just a minute after coming on in the 77th minute. Mansy finished calmly from close range after a perfect cross from Omar Gaber.
The match was nonetheless a keenly contested match, with either side propping up opportunities to win the match within regulation time. In the end, it went into penalties after Al Ahly’s late header through Rami Rabia missed just wide.
Yahia Attiyat Allah missed the crucial spot-kick for Al Ahly in the shoot-out, while Abou Ali hit the post. Zamalek kept their cool, converting four of the five penalties, with Hossam Abdelmaguid sealing the win by slotting his shot into the bottom corner to seal Zamalek’s historic Super Cup triumph.
