Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has ordered the rapid development and production of drone interceptors after what he described as the largest air assault since the war began.
Zelenskiy confirmed that many of the Russian drones and missiles used during the overnight attack on Kyiv were successfully brought down by Ukrainian forces. He stressed that interceptor drones played a vital role in defending the capital during the hours-long strike.
In his nightly video address, Zelenskiy declared, “Today also brought important results from our interceptor drones. Dozens of Shaheds were shot down specifically by these interceptors.”
The Ukrainian president added, “We are scaling this up as much as possible. More production of these interceptor drones, more training, and more preparation for our drone operators. This is a clear task.”
Largest Attack Prompts Ukraine’s Drone Push
The assault on Kyiv involved more than 500 Russian drones and missiles. Zelenskiy described it as “difficult,” but he praised the effectiveness of Ukraine’s growing drone defence systems.
He emphasized that boosting drone production has become a top priority. Zelenskiy stressed that developing drone interceptors is no longer optional but essential for Ukraine’s security.
“More interceptor drones mean stronger protection,” Zelenskiy stated firmly.
The drone industry in Ukraine was almost non-existent when Russia launched its invasion in February 2022. However, the worsening attacks have forced Ukraine to speed up its technological response.
Ukraine’s Drone Defence Now Central To War Strategy
Recent months have seen increasing drone attacks by Russia, pushing Ukraine to find new ways to respond. The use of drone interceptors allows Ukraine to conserve its missile supplies, which are expensive and limited.
Zelenskiy previously confirmed that Ukrainian firms had already increased production of interceptor drones in reaction to Russia’s intensified strikes.
Air Force spokesperson Yuri Ihnat also stressed last month that interceptor drones are critical for a smarter defence strategy. He explained that using drones instead of missiles helps Ukraine defend more effectively and at a lower cost.
Ihnat said, “Developing interceptor drones will help Ukraine use its resources more rationally in fending off Russian attacks.”
Zelenskiy’s Message Sends Clear Warning
Zelenskiy’s message leaves no room for doubt—Ukraine’s drone production will only accelerate. By directly linking drone interceptors to national survival, Zelenskiy has placed the full weight of his presidency behind this effort.
With Kyiv still recovering from the latest onslaught, the president’s words clearly reflect both Ukraine’s determination and its urgent need for advanced defences.
His order for rapid drone development signals a new phase in the war, where technology may define survival.
And as the war drags on, Ukraine’s skies will be defended with even more drone interceptors.
