At least 15 people were injured in a gas explosion on Sunday in Ijora Badia, a Lagos suburb.
The blast, which occurred around 5:00 p.m., was reportedly caused by a leaking 25-kilogramme gas cylinder inside a mini shop.
The shop was located within a bungalow complex that also contained 15 self-contained rooms and seven additional shops.
An eyewitness, Mr. Kabiru Ahmed, stated that the explosion caused significant damage, but fortunately, there were no fatalities.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the gas leak, likely caused by improper handling, was ignited by a nearby flame.
Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed the occurrence and said the fire was completely extinguished.
She further noted that the remaining gas cylinders were safely evacuated from the area.
Fifteen people, comprising both adults and children of all genders, sustained varying levels of burn injuries.
“Many received first aid on-site, while others were taken to the hospital for further treatment. Thankfully, none of the injuries are life-threatening,” Adeseye said.
She stated that emergency response teams from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Lagos State Ambulance Service, and the Nigeria Police were on-site.
