The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, —YOSEMA, has confirmed the death of one student in the fire outbreak that gutted one of the female hostels at the Federal University, Gashu’a.
The Emergency Management agency had given the confirmation via it official Facebook page on Saturday, revealing that 29 rooms were ruined in the fire incident.
The agency had also added that 301 students were affected, while three students received varying degrees of injuries and are receiving medical treatment.
The LGAs, Bade and Jakusko Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs) who visited the scene and made a spot assessment of casualties and the damaged items of students had confirmed the death of 1 female student, 29 ruined rooms. They also found that 301 students had been affected by the incident and the 3 injured people were receiving treatments.
In the post, the agency had on behalf of the Yobe State Government, sympathized with the management, staff and students of the university.
No doubt a sad incident, this fire could have been prevented if certain measures had been effectively put in place.
These measures include: Regular Inspections of the university facilities to identify and address any potential fire hazards, providing fire safety education and instructing students and staff members to raise awareness about fire prevention and emergency procedures, developing and constantly reviewing an effective emergency response plan to ensure swift and coordinated action in the event of a fire or other emergencies.
