August 1st is around the corner, and Nigerians are preparing for a massive nationwide protest. However – over 60,000 youths from the Arewa Integrity Group for Good Governance in the North Central region have decided to bow out.

Why It Matters

The Federal Government has been in a jittery state, holding meeting after meeting with various youth groups, begging them to postpone the protest. They want to give President Bola Tinubu’s administration more time to roll out “people-oriented” programs.

Joseph Maiwada, the group’s leader, announced their decision to withdraw in a statement in Lafia, Nasarawa State. According to him, they want to give the Federal Government a chance to address the people’s needs and maintain peace. Really, Joseph? Peace or complacency?

Maiwada mentioned that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who happens to be from the North Central region, has been pleading with youth groups to back down. Akume apparently reassured them of the government’s commitment to improving citizens’ welfare. Haven’t we heard that one before?

What They Are saying?

The statement read, “The Secretary to the Government of the Federation has appealed to notable youth groups and some pressure groups around the North Central zone of the country, and he has reassured us of the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of the citizens. We are willing to pacify our people to back down from the protest because the SGF has always stood with us and supported our cause.”

So, 60,000 youths are backing down to “ensure peace and unity.” Maiwada even advised other protest organizers to shelve their plans, citing the negative impacts of past protests on citizens and their livelihoods. He adviced the youth to support the Federal Government’s efforts to tackle socio-economic challenges instead of protesting.

Bottom Line

But here is the thing, if you don’t want to protest, fine. But do not stop others who believe in their right to voice out. Nigerian youths, ask yourselves – do you really want to stay silent?
