Most Americans believe it is inappropriate for President Trump to profit from cryptocurrency while in office, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Sixty-three percent of respondents said Trump and his family profiting from cryptocurrency is inappropriate, while 32 percent disagreed and 5 percent did not answer the question.

The poll comes after Trump reported more than $1 billion in cryptocurrency-related income last year, prompting Senate Democrats to push for investigations into potential national security consequences of the president’s digital asset holdings.

What Trump Reported

Earlier this summer, the Trump administration released the president’s financial disclosures, showing he made around $594 million from a crypto venture he started with his sons two years ago, World Liberty Financial. He also made another $635 million in connection with his meme coin

The combined total exceeds $1.2 billion in crypto-related income.

Senate Democrats’ Concerns

Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) cited the income and unspecified “third parties” that own more than half of World Liberty Financial as sources of concern.

The senators have pushed for probes into whether Trump’s crypto holdings create conflicts of interest or national security vulnerabilities.

Trump’s Response

In early July, Trump denied there was any illegality underlying the large profits from cryptocurrency seen in his financial disclosure forms.

“I could know about it. I didn’t. There’s nothing illegal. There’s nothing wrong with it I could know,” Trump said in an interview with CNBC.

The Bottom Line

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll finds that 63% of Americans believe it is inappropriate for President Trump and his family to profit from cryptocurrency while he is in office. Trump reported more than $1.2 billion in crypto-related income last year, including nearly $600 million from World Liberty Financial and $635 million from his meme coin. Senate Democrats have called for investigations into potential conflicts of interest and national security risks.
