The Nigerian government has received $52.88 million in recovered assets, linked to former Minister of Petroleum Diezani Alison-Madueke, from the United States. The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, disclosed this at a formal signing ceremony of the asset agreement between Nigeria and the United States in Abuja on Friday.
Allocation of Recovered Funds
In his remarks, Fagbemi explained the allocation of the recovered funds. He stated that $50 million will be channeled through the World Bank to support rural electrification projects, while the remaining $2.88 million will be directed to the International Institute of Justice. These funds will be used to expand Nigeria’s justice system and bolster efforts to counter corruption.
Milestone in Anti-Corruption Efforts
Fagbemi described the asset recovery as a significant milestone in the ongoing collaboration between Nigeria and the United States to combat corruption and promote the rule of law. He emphasized that this development is part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader strategy to address corruption in Nigeria.
U.S. Call for Accountability
United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, also spoke at the event, where he advised that the Nigerian Ministry of Justice properly monitors and effectively utilize the assets recovered for the benefit of Nigerians
