Newly appointed Super Eagles Head Coach, Éric Chelle, has boldly promised to lead Nigeria’s senior men’s football team to the 2026 World cup with an aggressive, attacking style of play, declaring that “football is about scoring goals.” Chelle made this statement during his official unveiling at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Monday. His appointment marks a significant moment for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as the Super Eagles prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Who is Chelle?

Chelle, a former Malian international with five caps for the Aiglons of Mali, is no stranger to competitive football, having played for European clubs like FC Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais. Now, the former defender is set to prove that he can transition from player to coach by delivering results for one of Africa’s most popular football teams. His appointment comes with high expectations, and Nigerians are eager to see if his promise of attacking football will translate into victories.

“I want to thank my agent, the NFF, the NSC, and all Nigerians for this big opportunity,” Chelle said. “Coaching the Super Eagles of Nigeria is an amazing job; I do not take this appointment for granted. I am elated and will do my utmost best. Football is about scoring goals, so I favour an attacking style. I know the expectations of Nigerians, and I will settle down and work diligently with my assistants towards the goal of qualifying the Super Eagles for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”

Eric Chelle

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Ibrahim Gusau, has urged Nigerians to rally behind Chelle, assuring that the NFF will provide full support for his success. Gusau seems confident in Chelle’s ability to lead the Super Eagles to World Cup glory. “I see in the new Head Coach the right spirit and the right attitude, and I have faith that he will take the Super Eagles to the next level,” Gusau said. “He sees the job of leading the Super Eagles as his dream job, and that is a huge motivation in itself. Coach Chelle recognises and appreciates what is ahead of him, and he says he loves the challenge. We will be there giving him the necessary support all the way.”

Why It Matters

It’s easy to talk about support and teamwork, but Nigerians know that results are the only language football understands. Gusau revealed that Chelle signed a two-year contract, with the option of an extra year if he successfully qualifies the Super Eagles for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. That clause alone shows that his survival as coach depends entirely on results. No World Cup ticket, no contract extension. It’s that simple.

Chelle isn’t walking into this job alone. He’s brought three assistants to join the existing coaching crew, signaling his intention to shake things up. Nigerian football has suffered from questionable leadership choices in the past, and this could be another mistake. For now, though, the NFF and its president are fully behind Chelle, placing Nigeria’s World Cup hopes squarely on his shoulders. If Chelle’s attacking football doesn’t bring results, he may quickly realize that managing the Super Eagles is not as easy as it looks.

Bottom Line

The 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers are fast approaching, and Nigerians are desperate for a return to global football prominence. Éric Chelle has made bold promises, but now it’s time to deliver. Failure is not an option.
