The Nigerian gospel music scene, celebrated for its uplifting sounds and spiritual messages, has recently been overshadowed by controversy. EeZee Conceptz, one of the most renowned gospel record labels in the country, and its CEO, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, are at the centre of allegations of financial misconduct brought forward by two of their most celebrated artists, Judikay and Mercy Chinwo.

The accusations have left many questioning the ethics of the music industry, particularly within the gospel community, where values like integrity and fairness are often emphasised. With allegations ranging from falsified accounts to the mismanagement of royalties, this case raises significant concerns about the treatment of artists and the responsibilities of record labels.

The Accusations Against EeZee Conceptz

Judikay, whose real name is Judith Kanayo, claims that the label falsified financial records and retained over £800,000 from her streaming royalties and other revenue sources. She also alleges that contracts were executed without her consent, involving platforms such as YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music.

Similarly, Mercy Chinwo, another celebrated gospel artist, has accused the label of withholding $345,000 in royalties. She further alleges that the label failed to remit her rightful share of earnings from digital platforms and live performances.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has since filed charges against Onyedikachukwu, following a Federal High Court’s issuance of an arrest warrant. The EFCC’s investigation has revealed discrepancies in financial reports, including undistributed income intended for artists and unaccounted funds in the label’s accounts.

The Label’s Defence

In response, Onyedikachukwu has denied the allegations, claiming that both Judikay and Mercy Chinwo have already received significant financial support from the label. He argues that the artists have violated their contractual agreements and that the accusations are attempts to tarnish his reputation.

He further alleged that Mercy Chinwo, in particular, has used her influence within the Christian community to misrepresent the situation. Onyedikachukwu maintains that EeZee Conceptz has been transparent in its dealings, citing his efforts to initiate an independent audit and resolve disputes amicably.

The Larger Issue: Artists’ Rights vs. Label Management

While the legal proceedings are set to continue on January 24, 2025, this controversy has sparked a broader conversation about the rights of artists and the obligations of record labels.

• Should labels have unrestricted control over artists’ earnings and contracts?

• Do artists bear some responsibility for fully understanding and adhering to their contracts?

• How can disputes like these be prevented in the future?

The music industry, gospel or otherwise, thrives on trust, collaboration, and mutual respect. When these values are compromised, it not only affects the parties involved but also shakes the confidence of fans and stakeholders.

Your Opinion Matters

As observers, fans, and stakeholders in the gospel music industry, what do you think about these allegations? Should record labels be held to stricter financial and ethical standards? How can artists protect themselves from potential exploitation?

This case serves as a wake-up call for the gospel music industry to prioritise transparency, fairness, and open communication. Whether you side with the artists or the label, one thing is clear: the time has come for a closer look at the dynamics of artist-label relationships.

What’s your take? Should more regulations be implemented to protect artists, or are these disputes simply a matter of personal accountability? Share your thoughts and join the conversation as we await further developments in this unfolding saga.
