Pressure Grows on Postecoglou After Tottenham’s Europa League Win

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou continues to be under the spotlight with the club struggling with domestic form despite a pivotal 3-2 Europa League win on Thursday evening against Hoffenheim. Spurs, who are 15th in the Premier League, will be out to revive their league campaign against bottom-of-the-table Leicester City this weekend.

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness, in an interview with Football Insider’s Inside Track (13:44), emphasised the need for Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to have clarity over Postecoglou’s future with summer transfer planning on the horizon. Wyness stressed that Levy had a preference for continuity, but he admitted the heat was on the Australian manager.

“There’s mitigating factors with injuries, but to play a high line without his best defenders is dangerous,” Wyness said. “Levy will not want to make a managerial change if he can avoid it, because he considers this a long-term project.”

And according to Football Insider (20 January), Tottenham have no plans to dismiss Postecoglou at this stage. Instead, he is set to streamline his tactical approach to turn the club’s fortunes around.

Postecoglou’s adventurous style has been criticized during a difficult stretch, including last week’s 3-2 defeat to Everton. Wyness added that tweaks are needed for it to work. “Ange has to learn from this and adapt his tactics and avoid repeating mistakes,” he said.

Spurs need to turn that lift into league deliveries after the boost of the Europa League win. With Leicester City entrenched near the foot of the table, Postecoglou’s side has a key chance to extricate itself from the domestic mire.
