A viral video circulating on social media depicts a group of young men preventing individuals dressed as police officers from accessing their property. The men in the video identify themselves as content creators, denying accusations of being internet fraudsters (Yahoo Boys). One masked officer fired a warning shot, while another scaled the fence to gain entry.

Police Spokesperson Addresses the Incident

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter) clarifying the legal implications of the incident. He acknowledged the video and its contents.

Edafe unequivocally stated that obstructing police officers from entering or exiting a premise is illegal and punishable by law. He emphasized that this offense holds regardless of the officers’ attire or actions.

Questionable Police Tactics

While condemning the residents’ actions, Edafe also criticized the officers’ use of masks, noting that this practice is against Nigeria Police Force regulations and raises serious concerns. He stated, “Wearing a mask as a policeman is a red flag and it’s not allowed in policing.”

Edafe questioned the residents’ preemptive denial of being internet fraudsters, highlighting that the police had not yet made any such accusation.

He stated, “But why did they say they are not yahoo boys but content creators even though the Police never asked them any questions? Just asking though.”

Ongoing Investigation

Edafe concluded by stating that the police are investigating the incident to determine the location and ascertain all the facts. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances fully.
