A report from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Removal Operations reveals that approximately 3,690 Nigerians in the United States face deportation. This figure is part of a larger effort targeting 1,445,549 non-citizens with final removal orders as of November 24, 2024, with Mexico and El Salvador having the highest numbers. The Trump administration’s anti-illegal immigration policies, implemented starting January 20, 2025, have intensified enforcement actions, including the threat of prosecution against local and state authorities that fail to cooperate. A large-scale deportation operation, described as the “largest in history” by Trump’s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, is underway.

Impact on the Nigerian Community

The heightened enforcement has created a climate of fear among Nigerian immigrants. One anonymous Nigerian in Florida reported that many undocumented immigrants, particularly those of African descent, have ceased working and significantly restricted their movements to avoid ICE agents. This has resulted in a dramatic change in daily life, with individuals forgoing work, church, and social activities to minimize their risk of arrest. Despite the fear and hardship, the individual interviewed stated that the situation in the US remains preferable to conditions in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Government’s Response

The Nigerian government acknowledges that 201 Nigerian citizens are currently in US custody awaiting deportation. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed that the US government has not yet officially communicated the date and time of the deportations to the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, D.C. According to established diplomatic protocol, such notification is required before any deportation can proceed.

Conclusion

The Trump administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement has created significant hardship and fear within the Nigerian immigrant community in the United States. While the Nigerian government is aware of the impending deportations, the lack of formal communication from the US government highlights the uncertainty and anxiety faced by those affected. The situation underscores the complex interplay between US immigration policy and its impact on individuals and nations, emphasizing the need for clear communication and adherence to established diplomatic practices.
