Trump Calls for USAID Shutdown

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified his campaign to shrink the federal government by calling for the closure of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). In a bold statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared, “THE CORRUPTION IS AT LEVELS RARELY SEEN BEFORE. CLOSE IT DOWN!”

This move aligns with his broader agenda to reduce the size of the U.S. government, an effort spearheaded by his top donor, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. Since returning to office, Trump has aggressively targeted USAID, ordering thousands of its foreign-based staff to return to the United States and freezing humanitarian aid programs worldwide.

The Impact of USAID’s Potential Shutdown

USAID, which oversees U.S. humanitarian aid across approximately 120 countries, has long been a critical tool for American foreign policy and global influence. With an annual budget of around $58 billion, the agency supports health and emergency relief programs in some of the world’s poorest regions. However, Trump and his allies argue that much of this spending is unnecessary, accusing the agency of fraud and inefficiency.

A recent report from The New York Times revealed that the Trump administration plans to slash USAID’s workforce from 10,000 employees to just 300. This drastic reduction has alarmed humanitarian organizations, which fear that millions of vulnerable people will be left without aid as programs are suspended. The move has also sparked legal battles, with labor unions challenging the administration’s ability to dismantle government agencies without congressional approval.

Political Fallout and Wider Government Cuts

Trump’s war on USAID is just one part of his large campaign to restructure the federal government. He has also announced plans to shut down the Department of Education, arguing that federal oversight in education is unnecessary.

Democrats in Congress have pushed back, insisting that Trump lacks the constitutional authority to unilaterally close government agencies. They argue that USAID’s budget, which accounts for less than 1.4% of total U.S. government spending, is a crucial investment in global stability and American diplomacy.

Meanwhile, hard-right Republicans and libertarians have welcomed Trump’s efforts, long arguing that USAID represents wasteful foreign spending. With Musk actively supporting buyouts of federal workers, critics warn that Trump’s administration is not just downsizing the government—it is dismantling institutions that have shaped U.S. global influence for decades.

Trump remains defiant, insisting that USAID is a corrupt institution that must be eliminated. “USAID IS DRIVING THE RADICAL LEFT CRAZY,” he posted. “SO MUCH OF IT FRAUDULENTLY, IS TOTALLY UNEXPLAINABLE.”

As the debate rages on, the fate of USAID and the future of U.S. foreign aid remains uncertain.
