Closure Details and Purpose

According to a memo dated February 28, 2025, from FAAN’s Head of Operations, Mrs. J.U. Nwosu, the closure is scheduled for March 3 and 4, 2025. The runway will be closed to facilitate the asphalt phase rehabilitation at the A2 Taxiway-link. This decision stems from safety concerns, as protruding construction equipment could pose hazards to landing and departing aircraft.

Alternative Arrangements

During this period, Runway 18L/36R will remain operational. Typically used for domestic flights, this runway will temporarily accommodate international operations. FAAN has advised technical departments affected by the closure to conduct regular inspections covering grass management, enhanced security, and continuous 24-hour surveillance to maintain safety and efficiency.

Why This Matters

The closure of Runway 18R/36L is significant due to its role in accommodating larger international aircraft, thanks to its length of 3,900 meters (12,794 feet) and width of 60 meters (197 feet). Past closures have led to operational challenges. For instance, a maintenance project initiated in March 2023 was expected to last eight weeks but extended to nearly 11 months, causing disruptions in air traffic and increased operational costs for airlines. Such closures necessitate the use of the shorter Runway 18L/36R for all flights, leading to potential delays and logistical challenges.

Conclusion

FAAN’s proactive approach to infrastructure maintenance underlines its commitment to aviation safety and operational efficiency at Murtala Muhammed International Airport. While the temporary closure of Runway 18R/36L may cause short-term inconveniences, these rehabilitation efforts are crucial for ensuring the long-term reliability of airport operations. Travelers and airlines are advised to stay updated on flight schedules and plan accordingly during this maintenance period.
