Dr. Doyin Okupe, former Presidential spokesperson who served under the administration of Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, passed away in the early hours of Friday in Lagos at the age of 72 after a prolonged illness. His death was confirmed by the Chairman of Ikenne Local Government, Jamiu Ashimi, and a close associate, Chief Michael Adesanya. Okupe was a native of Iperu-Remo in Ogun State’s Ikenne Local Government Area.

Political Career and Key Roles

Okupe was a seasoned politician and media strategist, who had held prominent positions within various administrations. He served as Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo and later as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan. More recently, in 2023, he served as the Director-General of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign under the Labour Party before resigning due to legal challenges.

Okupe’s political career was marked by controversy. In December 2022, he was convicted of violating the Money Laundering Act. This conviction led to his resignation from Obi’s campaign and the Labour Party following the 2023 general elections.

Despite his legal battles, Okupe remained an influential figure in Nigerian politics. In his later years, he became a vocal supporter of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and frequently offered political commentary.

Beyond his political career, Dr. Okupe was a trained physician who co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre. His involvement in Nigerian politics extended to serving as the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC) and making a bid for the Ogun State governorship under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
