The 24-year-old was set to link up with the Swiss for upcoming games versus North Macedonia and Scotland, but the Swiss Football Association confirmed Friday that he would not be heading to Switzerland.
“The decision is taken in order to keep the team focused exclusively on their future matches,” said the federation.
Embolo’s departure follows a few days after captain Granit Xhaka quit the team after being named in an investigation of a doctor who allegedly falsified vaccination certificates for patients during the Covid pandemic.
Xhaka, who has 152 caps for his country, confirmed that he had acquired the fake and that he was guilty of making a mistake in 2022.
Switzerland Today, a Swiss news outlet, provided new insights regarding the financial punishment Embolo received last year due to the fake test documents.
Already banned for Saturday’s opening Nations League fixture as a result of a red card during Switzerland’s defeat by Argentina in the World Cup quarter-finals last term, the 29-year-old could now miss all three games in this international break. IFAB has since admitted Embolo was wrongly red-carded for a VAR error.
Saturday’s fixture with Switzerland has been scheduled, and on Tuesday the team plays Scotland. Then there will be a trip to Slovenia on Saturday 12 November and North Macedonia at home a couple of days later.
