The drama unfolding in the Rivers State political landscape continues as the State House of Assembly extends its ultimatum for the Chairman and Commissioners of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to appear before it. This latest move comes after Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retd.) and his team failed to meet an earlier 48-hour deadline. Now, they have until Monday, March 10, to comply or face the consequences.

A Last Chance for RSIEC?

During Friday’s plenary session in Port Harcourt, lawmakers, led by Hon. Enemi George, debated the issue extensively before agreeing to grant a 72-hour extension. The Assembly wants Justice Enebeli and other RSIEC officials to provide answers regarding the conduct of the controversial 2024 local government elections.

Recess Suspended as Lawmakers Tighten Their Grip

Originally, the Assembly had planned to go on recess. However, sensing the gravity of the situation, Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol moved a motion to suspend the break. Lawmakers will now remain in session, ensuring that the RSIEC issue is addressed without delay. This decision underscores the Assembly’s determination to hold the electoral body accountable.

Governor Fubara Under Scrutiny

In a parallel development, Speaker Martin Amaewhule pointed out that Governor Siminalayi Fubara has yet to present the 2025 budget, despite receiving his own 48-hour ultimatum. The Assembly, having taken legislative notice of this delay, has hinted at taking further action soon. This raises questions about an escalating power struggle between the legislative and executive arms of the state government.

Will RSIEC Comply or Face Arrest?

This is not the first time the House has summoned Justice Enebeli. During Wednesday’s plenary, Speaker Amaewhule made it clear that failure to appear within the stipulated time could lead to a warrant for his arrest. With tensions rising, all eyes are now on RSIEC—will its officials show up, or will they test the Assembly’s resolve?

The Bigger Picture

The political chess game in Rivers State is heating up, with the Assembly flexing its muscles in a bid to enforce accountability. Whether this latest move will lead to compliance or further deepen the standoff remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that the coming days will be crucial in shaping the state’s political future.
