The Senate has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize by-elections for the vacant senatorial seats in Edo Central and Anambra South. Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement during plenary on Tuesday, officially declaring the vacancies in the chamber.

Background of the Vacant Seats

The Edo Central Senatorial District seat became vacant after Monday Okpebholo was inaugurated as Governor of Edo State in December 2024. Okpebholo’s election as governor created the need for a replacement in the Senate. Similarly, the Anambra South seat has remained unoccupied following the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah in July 2024.

INEC’s Position on the By-Elections

In January 2025, INEC clarified that it was awaiting a formal request from the Senate before proceeding with the by-election for Anambra South. This position was reiterated by Anambra State’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Elizabeth Agu, during a stakeholders’ dialogue organized by the International Press Centre (IPC) in Awka. With the Senate now making the formal declaration, the electoral body is expected to take the necessary steps to conduct the elections.

Call for Swift Action

With both senatorial districts currently unrepresented, Akpabio urged INEC to expedite the by-elections to ensure proper representation for the affected constituencies. The absence of senators from these districts means their constituents lack a voice in legislative decisions, making the elections crucial for democratic representation.

Conclusion

The Senate’s call for by-elections underscores the importance of full representation in the legislative process. With INEC now expected to act on the Senate’s formal request, attention will be on how quickly the electoral body organizes the elections. The outcome will determine when the people of Edo Central and Anambra South regain their representation in the Senate.
