Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has responded to Fabio Capello’s criticism that his arrogance has prevented him from winning several Champions League titles, arguing that his impact has elevated the Premier League’s average standard.

Fabio Capello, the former England, AC Milan and Real Madrid manager, explained to El Mundo recently that Guardiola’s “presumptuous” tactics were the attribute that propelled him to success but also to infrequent failure. He also accused the Spaniard of “ruining” Italian football as coaches emulated his unsuccessful possession-based philosophy.

Guardiola, though, defended his record and highlighted six Premier League titles and last season’s historic treble. “We helped raise the level in the Premier League. “Clubs have had to do better, recruit better, and make better decisions,” he said.

City, who have reigned over English football in recent seasons, are having a difficult campaign and currently lie fifth. But as Guardiola pointed out, the league had changed a lot since he arrived in 2016. “The evolution’s been massive. The competition has never been stronger.”

Asked for his thoughts on Capello’s recent comments, Guardiola kept his reply short: “I listen to everything people say, so be careful! A big hug for Fabio.”
