The Senate has granted President Bola Tinubu full powers over the Rivers emergency, approving his proclamation of a state of emergency in the state. This decision, made under the amended 1999 Constitution, gives Tinubu the authority to enforce emergency measures, with a mandatory review of the situation within six months.

Following Tinubu’s declaration, the Senate formally endorsed the emergency measures, aligning with the House of Representatives, which had earlier given its approval. In addition to backing the state of emergency, the National Assembly has set up a joint committee from both chambers to oversee governance in Rivers State during the emergency period.

Beyond legislative oversight, the Senate has also agreed to establish a mediation committee made up of eminent Nigerians who will work towards resolving the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. This decision reflects the seriousness of the situation, as lawmakers seek to balance emergency intervention with political reconciliation.

The Senate’s approval grants Tinubu unrestricted powers to implement emergency governance in the state. However, critics argue that this could set a dangerous precedent, potentially eroding state autonomy and expanding federal control over state matters.

Lawmakers Back Tinubu’s Emergency Declaration in Rivers

In a voice vote, the House of Representatives had earlier approved Tinubu’s emergency declaration, further strengthening legislative backing for the move. The approval came just two days after Tinubu’s announcement, emphasizing the urgency of federal intervention in Rivers State.

During the House session, 240 lawmakers were present, with Speaker Tajudeen Abbas presiding over the deliberations. Their decision mirrored the Senate’s stance, reinforcing the necessity of federal oversight in Rivers State amid ongoing political tensions.

Is the State of Emergency Justified?

While the Senate has granted Tinubu full powers over Rivers emergency, the decision remains highly controversial. Some Nigerians argue that the state of emergency is necessary to restore order, while others believe it could become a tool for political control.

As Rivers State enters this emergency phase, the nation watches closely. Whether Tinubu’s intervention will bring stability or fuel more political unrest in the state.
