The leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the South West has declared that it is unaware of any plans by former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, to join the party in pursuit of its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election.
Zonal leader of the party, Mulikat Adeola Akande, made this clarification on Saturday during an iftar organized for party members across the 11 local government councils within Ibadan city.
SDP Open to New Members
Addressing concerns about party membership, Adeola reiterated that the SDP remains open to welcoming new members, provided they are willing to abide by the party’s rules. She emphasized that politics is a game of numbers and that the party is willing to accept defectors who respect the existing structure.
“Politics is a game of numbers, and anybody who wants to come into SDP is welcome as long as they are ready to play by the rules of the party and not with the mind of taking the party from those who are there before,” Adeola stated.
Commitment to Credible Candidates
Adeola assured party members that the SDP is committed to fielding credible and trustworthy candidates for elective positions in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 general elections. She stressed the importance of selecting individuals with integrity who are dedicated to serving the people.
“We must have the right candidates, somebody tested and trusted, who has integrity that when people hear his name, they can rely on him. Someone who is dependable and reliable; who will work for the people and not for himself. Those are the qualities we are looking for,” she added.
Adeola’s Political Journey and Departure from PDP
Reflecting on her political career, Adeola, who represented Ogbomoso North/South and Oriire Federal Constituency between 2007 and 2015 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), explained her reasons for leaving the party. She cited betrayal during her senatorial campaign as the catalyst for her defection to the SDP.
“I ran for Senate, and we worked for the present governor of the State, Governor Seyi Makinde. While we were working for him, he was working against me; it was something I have never seen before; it was a total betrayal,” Adeola revealed.
Call for Political Participation
During the event, Adeola was joined by Michael Ogunlade, Oyo State Chairman of the SDP, and Akintola Ezekiel, Director of National Mobilisation and Strategy for the party. Together, they urged members to actively participate in the political process by registering in their wards and ensuring they collect their voter’s cards.
