There is growing tension in Sokoto State following rumors of a possible protest over the recent killings of 16 hunters in Uromi, Edo State. Reports indicate that business activities in major areas, especially those dominated by non-indigenes, have been affected as traders fear potential violence.

A visit to key business hubs such as Bello Way, Emir Yahya, Sahara, and Aliyu Jodi revealed that many shops were locked. A correspondent of PUNCH observed that Igbo traders, in particular, took precautionary measures by shutting down their businesses.

One of the shop owners, Chinedu, explained his decision: “We heard of the rumor of a possible protest and attack by some youths after Friday prayers, so we decided to take precautionary measures. One should not wait until something happens before taking action, so we closed our shop.”

Another trader, who sells vehicle tyres in Sahara and spoke on condition of anonymity, said the fear of looting prompted the closures.

“The last time there was a protest during the late Deborah issue, looters took advantage of the chaos to attack and steal from us. This time, we decided to act early to protect our goods,” he stated.

The fear of attacks has been heightened by past incidents where violent protests led to destruction and loss of property. Many non-indigenous traders believe they are the most vulnerable during such unrest and have therefore taken proactive steps to safeguard their businesses.

Police Assure Residents of Security in Sokoto

In response to the growing tension, the Sokoto State Police Command has reassured residents of their commitment to maintaining law and order.

Speaking to our correspondent, the command’s spokesman, DSP Ahmed Rufai, said, “The police have deployed officers across the metropolis to ensure the safety of lives and property. We urge residents to remain calm and go about their daily activities without fear.”

Despite the heightened anxiety, no incidents of violence or attacks have been recorded as of the time of filing this report. However, security operatives remain on high alert to prevent any outbreak of violence.

The situation remains tense, with many residents closely monitoring developments. Whether the rumored protest will happen or not, businesses have already been affected, and the fear of insecurity continues to grip the state.
