President Bola Tinubu has strongly disowned all 2027 campaign billboards and posters currently appearing across major cities in Nigeria. According to a statement from the Presidency, these materials promoting the 2027 presidential ambition of Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima are unauthorized and in violation of electoral laws. The statement, signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, warned individuals and groups behind these promotions to “cease immediately.”

Billboards Violate Electoral Law, Says Presidency

The Presidency made it clear that the sudden appearance of 2027 campaign billboards in cities like Abuja and Kano goes against Nigeria’s electoral laws. “The Presidency has observed, with dismay, the increasing number of billboards in some cities,” Onanuga stated. He explained that some of these billboards even display images of the President and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. This, according to him, is not only illegal but also disrespectful to the democratic process.

The government emphasized that any form of campaign for the 2027 general elections at this point is premature, illegal, and unacceptable. Electoral laws are clear: campaigns are to begin only when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially gives the go-ahead. Any earlier move amounts to lawbreaking and undermines electoral fairness.

Premature 2027 Campaign Breaches the Law

The Presidency has now distanced itself from these illegal activities. “President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima greatly appreciate their teeming and loyal supporters across the country for their enthusiasm and continuing support,” the statement said, “but the two leaders do not support any campaign that breaches the laws of the land.”

Onanuga stressed that engaging in premature campaigning creates an unfair political advantage. It also threatens the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process. In other words, using political billboards before INEC’s official timeline is not just illegal, it’s unethical. The Presidency urged political groups and individuals to follow due process and wait for the appropriate time before beginning any campaign.

In summary, Tinubu has disowned 2027 campaign billboards, and the Nigerian public is advised to respect electoral law. Any political campaign ahead of INEC’s timetable is unlawful, unfair, and unacceptable.
