The North and South American Representation

The Americas will be strongly represented with U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump leading the American delegation. They will be joined by Argentine President Javier Milei, returning to his homeland to honor the first Latin American pope. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and first lady Janja Lula da Silva will attend alongside leaders from Ecuador, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic.

European Monarchs and Political Leaders

European royalty including Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia will join political leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz will represent Europe’s largest economy, while Britain’s Prince William and Prime Minister Keir Starmer cross the Channel to pay respects.

Asian and African Delegations

The Philippines’ President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will represent Asia’s largest Catholic nation, joined by Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus. From Africa, Gabon’s President Brice Oligui Nguema and Democratic Republic of Congo’s Félix Tshisekedi will attend, highlighting Pope Francis’ focus on the developing world during his papacy.

International Organizations and Special Envoys

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will represent the global body, while the European Union sends its three top officials: Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Council President António Costa, and Parliament President Roberta Metsola. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s attendance carries particular significance given the pontiff’s peace efforts during the Russian invasion.

Notable Absences and Representation

While the list of attendees spans six continents, some nations have sent lower-level delegations. The event marks one of the largest gatherings of world leaders since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, with security preparations matching the historic occasion. Vatican officials confirm all living former popes will attend, creating a rare convergence of pontiffs.

This list will be updated as additional confirmations are received ahead of Saturday’s funeral mass. The Vatican expects over 100 current and former heads of state to attend the ceremony, which will be broadcast globally to an anticipated audience of billions.
