Club World Cup: Monterrey Hold Inter Milan 1-1 in Chivu’s Dugout Debut

Inter Milan squandered their debut match as coach Cristian Chivu saw them draw 1-1 against Mexican side Monterrey in the FIFA Club World Cup at the Rose Bowl.

Recovering from a trophy-less end to the 2024/25 campaign, the Nerazzurri made a bright start but could not turn early pressure into goals. They were made to pay for that profligacy, and 1-0 down at the half when Sergio Ramos rose highest to thunder home a header from a corner after Sergio Canales went on a cosuming, foraging run that won the set-piece.

But Inter responded well and levelled shortly before the break. A smart free-kick routine presented Carlos Augusto with an opportunity and his cross was squared for Lautaro Martinez to fire home from two yards.

The Italians had several opportunities in the second half and twice Martinez went close – having one effort disallowed for offside and missing the target from a good position late on.

Chivu, however, can draw enough positives from his team’s attacking adventure and fighting spirit. Monterrey, meanwhile, kept up its incredible scoring record of 12 goals from 13 Club World Cup matches and will be happy to take a point off the European giants.

Inter are now under pressure going into their second group game.
