Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, widely known as Mr P and one-half of the now-defunct music duo P-Square, has addressed long-running claims about his talent, declaring himself the only certified musician in the Okoye family.

During a performance at the recent AY Live event, Mr P responded to critics who often compare him unfavourably to his twin brother and former bandmate, Paul Okoye. He stated that such comparisons played a major role in the duo’s fallout.

“I have sang and danced but they told you I am talentless. I will prove myself today,” he told the audience.

“The reason P-Square slipt was because two brothers were doing their thing and some fans started saying one was more talented than the other and it got into his head and he started misbehaving,” Mr P added.

He went further to clarify that, contrary to public opinion, he has formal training in music.

“They lied to you. In the whole of Okoye’s family, I’m the only one with music certificate. I read music. But they lied to you. I know the liars but let’s leave it,” he said.

To drive home his point, Mr P showcased his abilities by singing, dancing, and playing both the piano and guitar on stage. He then asked, “I have sang, danced and played the piano and the guitar, is it easy?”

The performance wasn’t just entertainment—it was a defiant response to years of criticism and an effort to reclaim his place in Nigeria’s music narrative.
