Jose Mourinho is the new head coach of Benfica. This is an amazing comeback to the Lisbon giants after 25 years from his first time. The 62-year-old takes over from Bruno Lage, who was let go after Qarabag’s victory in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Mourinho, who left Fenerbahce earlier this year, is currently unemployed. However, he has already signed a deal that will last until the 2026/27 season with a condition that they can terminate the agreement at the end of the present course if mutually agreed.
“What I can guarantee is that I will live for Benfica, for my mission,” Mourinho said to the media at the club’s training base. “I am not the one who matters, Benfica is. I want to win trophies, and I feel more than ever alive.”
The Portuguese manager will lead his second team at Estadio da Luz this Saturday against AFS at Liga Portugal. Benfica are currently in fourth place with 10 points, five behind the leaders Porto but with a match less.
It is quite a feat that Mourinho’s European debut with the Eagles will be a match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, the club that gave him his global reputation. His comeback is yet another instance of his illustrious career that has covered Porto, Inter, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Roma.
