Facebook and Instagram users across several countries experienced service disruptions on Sunday, with many reporting they were unable to access their accounts or load their feeds.
According to internet monitoring platform DownDetector, more than 23,000 users in the United States reported issues with Facebook between 3:44 a.m. and 5:02 a.m. ET, before complaints declined significantly.
During the same period, over 18,000 users also reported problems accessing Instagram.
Global internet watchdog NetBlocks confirmed that the disruption affected users internationally and said the outage was not linked to internet restrictions or connectivity issues in any particular country.
Users impacted by the outage who attempted to access Facebook were met with an error message stating that their account was “currently unavailable due to a site issue,” and were advised to try again “in a few minutes.”
Meanwhile, WhatsApp, which is also owned by Meta, appeared to operate normally and was not affected by the disruption.
