American playwright and actor Jeremy O. Harris has been released in Japan following a three-week detention over alleged drug smuggling.

The 36-year-old was taken into custody on November 16 at Naha Airport in Okinawa after arriving from Taiwan.

Japanese authorities said a small amount—around 780 milligrams—of MDMA (Ecstasy) was discovered in his carry-on bag during a routine customs check.

While prosecutors in Naha had been notified to consider potential violations of Japan’s strict drug and customs laws, the Tomishiro police station in Tomigusuku City confirmed Harris’ release on Monday. Officials did not clarify whether formal charges were filed.

Representatives for Harris indicated that he was released without facing charges and intends to stay in Japan to continue writing and researching for an upcoming project. Convictions under Japanese anti-drug laws could carry a sentence of up to seven years in prison.

Harris is best known for his 2018 play Slave Play, which earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Play. He also co-wrote and produced the 2021 film Zola, which was recognized with an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Screenplay.
