Madam Lucia Onabanjo, the wife of Ogun State’s pioneer civilian governor, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, has died at the age of 100.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by her daughter, Olubukunola Onabanjo, who revealed that the family matriarch passed on peacefully on Monday.

In an official statement, the Onabanjo family expressed both grief and gratitude to God for her life and legacy.

“The family of Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, former Governor of Ogun State, announces with deep sorrow, yet with gratitude to Almighty God, the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother,” the statement said.

It further disclosed that “Chief (Mrs.) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo (1925–2026) was called to glory on Monday, January 11.”

Reflecting on her long life, the family added, “We thank God for her long and fulfilled life, and for the enduring legacy of love, strength, and faith she leaves behind. May her soul rest in perfect peace.”

Madam Onabanjo was married to Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, who governed Ogun State from 1979 to 1983 as its first civilian leader. Beyond politics, he was also a respected journalist and publisher, widely known for his popular weekly column, Ayekooto, before his passing in 1990.

Her death has been described as the close of a significant chapter for the Onabanjo family, with many paying tribute to her remarkable longevity, strong values, and lasting influence.
