Macklemore Blames ‘Billionaires’ for Arena Snub. MSG Says He’s Just Not Famous Enough

Macklemore wants you to believe the billionaires silenced him. Madison Square Garden has a different explanation.

The rapper says nine major American arenas refused to host his “Free Palestine” benefit tour, claiming they pulled available dates once they learned the concerts would support Palestinian causes. His team had secured dates through the end of the year by mid-September, he wrote in an Instagram post Friday.

“But once they found out these were my benefit shows for Palestine, those dates were suddenly off the table,” he wrote. “The doors were closed. The conversations were all different, but the result was the same.”

The Venues He Named

Macklemore listed nine arenas: Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center in New York, UBS Arena on Long Island, Prudential Center in Newark, Intuit Dome, Kia Forum and Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, Chase Center in San Francisco, and Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, his hometown.

“In over twenty years of touring, I’ve never experienced anything like this,” he wrote.

MSG’s Brutal Response

Madison Square Garden didn’t just deny the claim. It questioned whether Macklemore could fill the building in the first place.

“We have some of the busiest venues in the world with extremely limited availability and he’s not an arena level act,” a spokesperson told Billboard.

The other venues did not respond to requests for comment. Notably, Macklemore’s three European Free Palestine shows all took place in arenas — Dublin’s 3Arena, Paris’s Accor Arena, and London’s OVO Arena Wembley — and each sold out, according to the rapper. That detail complicates MSG’s narrative, even if it doesn’t fully refute it.

The Backstory

The dispute traces back to September, when Macklemore was removed as an opening act on Ed Sheeran’s US tour after saying “Free Palestine” onstage at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Stadium owners, including Robert Kraft’s Kraft Group, pressured promoters to drop him. Several of Sheeran’s other supporting acts withdrew in solidarity.

Macklemore subsequently announced a European benefit tour, donating $1 million from his short-lived Sheeran contract to Palestinian aid. He said he always intended to bring the tour to the US.

“We live in a country that prides on freedom of speech,” he wrote Friday. “Yet we’ve reached a point where a handful of billionaires can decide which causes are acceptable, which voices are welcome and which human lives are worth defending.”

The Bottom Line

Macklemore says nine major US arenas refused to host his Free Palestine benefit tour after initially offering dates. Madison Square Garden denied the claim, saying he is “not an arena level act.” The dispute follows his removal from Ed Sheeran’s tour in September over pro-Palestine comments. Macklemore says he will continue organizing benefit shows, even if he has to play outside traditional venues.

My Opinion

The Free Palestine cause has a Macklemore problem. He is not a serious activist. He is a rapper who has not had a hit in a decade and has found a new audience by wrapping himself in a geopolitical tragedy.

Let us be honest about what happened here. Macklemore named nine arenas. Nine. If he genuinely wanted to play these cities, he could have booked theaters. He could have booked clubs. He could have rented a parking lot in Brooklyn and streamed it for free. Instead, he wrote an Instagram post about how the billionaires are conspiring against him and collected the headlines. The performative martyrdom is the point. It gets him more attention than the tour ever would.

Madison Square Garden’s response — “he’s not an arena level act” — is the only honest thing anyone has said in this entire saga. And it is almost certainly true. Macklemore has not had a hit in years. His last arena tour was a decade ago. If he wanted to book MSG for a regular concert, the venue might have said no anyway. The difference is that now he has a convenient excuse, and his fans have a convenient villain.

And the “Free Palestine” cause deserves better than this. It deserves organizers who build coalitions, not rappers who turn a geopolitical tragedy into a personal brand. He donated $1 million. Good for him. That money will help people. But the theater of this moment — the Instagram statement, the named venues, the dramatic claim of censorship — is not about Palestine. It is about Macklemore.

The arenas did not only censor him, they made a business decision too. And Macklemore is making one too: turning a rejection into a story that keeps him relevant. The only people who lose are the gullible ones who actually believed this was about anything other than himself.
