Attention bargain hunters: Aldi is changing the way you shop. And for Maryland residents, the wait for a new store closer to home is almost over.

The German discount supermarket chain is rolling out a brand-new store format designed to fit into more neighborhoods — from sprawling suburbs to dense urban centers. As part of a massive $9 billion expansion, Aldi plans to open more than 180 new locations across 31 states this year alone. And Maryland is on the list.

New Aldi Maryland Location Confirmed for West Baltimore

The new Aldi Maryland location is coming to West Baltimore. The store will be located at the Edmondson Village Shopping Center, as part of a major revitalization project co-owned by over 200 community residents and investors.

The shopping center redevelopment also includes Charley’s Cheesesteaks, Dunkin’, DTLR, and Quickway Japanese Hibachi. The Aldi store is expected to open by 2027.

For Baltimore residents who have long wanted a discount grocery option in their neighborhood, this is welcome news. Aldi’s commitment to low prices and efficiency will now be accessible to thousands of West Baltimore families.

What Is Aldi’s New Store Format?

While Maryland waits for its new Aldi store, the chain is reinventing how its stores look and function across the country.

In partnership with Australian brand and design consultancy Landini Associates, Aldi is introducing an adaptable modular redesign. Trials of the new format began in late 2025 in Aventura, Florida — one of Aldi’s fastest-growing regions. Further experimentation will continue throughout 2026 across the country.

The goal is simple: allow Aldi to fit into more real estate locations and configurations. Traditional suburban supermarkets remain the core. But the new modular design also allows for smaller urban footprints — meaning Aldi could soon open in dense city centers where real estate is tight.

What will not change? Aldi’s laser focus on low prices and efficiency. The chain’s famous “aisle of shame” — the rotating section of non-grocery finds that shoppers love — is expected to remain. But the low prices that built Aldi’s reputation are not going anywhere.

Aldi’s Massive U.S. Expansion by the Numbers

Aldi currently operates more than 2,400 stores in the United States. But the company is just getting started.

By the end of 2028, Aldi is slated to operate a total of 3,200 stores nationwide. That is nearly 800 new stores in just a few years. The company’s $9 billion expansion is expected to strengthen its presence in the Northeast and Midwest, adding nearly 330 stores across both regions.

This year alone, Aldi will open more than 180 new stores across 31 states. The Southeast and Midwest are particular focuses. But the Northeast — including Maryland — is also a major priority.

Other Confirmed Aldi New Store Locations Across the U.S.

Aldi has confirmed specific new store locations in multiple states.

In Maine, the chain opened its first-ever store in Portland at 1100 Brighton Avenue, making Maine the 40th state to welcome an Aldi location. “We are thrilled to be expanding into the state of Maine as part of our expansion in the Northeast,” Chris Daniels, regional vice president for Aldi, said in a statement.

In Florida, new Aldi locations include Port Orange at 4025 S. Nova Road, Chiefland at 2202 N. Young Blvd., Deerfield Beach at 2301 W. Sample Road, Micco at 7960 U.S. Highway 1, Fort Lauderdale at 941 Southwest 24th St., Jacksonville at 777 N. Market St., Neptune Beach at 1209 N. Atlantic Blvd., and Daytona Beach Shores at 2200 S. Atlantic Ave.

In Arizona, Aldi is opening 10 new stores in Phoenix in 2026, with a total of 40 planned by 2030. In Nevada, the chain is adding four additional stores in Las Vegas by 2030.

And in Maryland, the confirmed new Aldi location is West Baltimore at the Edmondson Village Shopping Center, expected to open by 2027.

Aldi Celebrates 50 Years in the U.S.

This year, Aldi is also celebrating its 50th anniversary in the United States. To mark the occasion, the family-owned grocery chain is releasing a limited-edition collection of branded merchandise. The collection includes keychains, candles, tumblers, and sweatshirts — perfect for loyal shoppers who want to rep their favorite discount grocer.

What This Means for Maryland Shoppers

For Maryland residents, the combination of Aldi’s new modular store format and its aggressive Northeast expansion means one thing: more new Aldi store locations are coming.

The new format allows Aldi to open in smaller urban spaces, which could bring the chain into downtown Baltimore, Silver Spring, Columbia, and other densely populated areas where traditional supermarkets struggle to find real estate.

While the Edmondson Village location is currently the only confirmed new Aldi Maryland address, Aldi’s expansion plans suggest that more announcements are likely. The chain has named Maryland as a target state for growth. Residents should stay tuned for further news.
