United States coach Mauricio Pochettino couldn’t be more delighted to witness global icon Lionel Messi rip Algeria to pieces on his way to another incredible individual performance on the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening night.
Messi notched a breathtaking hat-trick to lead reigning champions Argentina to a commanding 3-0 opening day triumph – and his three goals equalled legendary striker Miroslav Klose’s men’s World Cup scoring record of 16. The Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner still boasts an incredible scoring record for both Argentina and his current club.
Speaking in his press conference after his fellow Argentine’s display, the former PSG manager said: “He’s on another level, and any word we use for him is never enough.”

The 51-year-old coach spent the 2021-2022 campaign managing Messi and insisted he is continually astonished by the veteran striker’s form in the sport. “He plays for and represents Argentina; it’s clear they are major contenders for a second successive trophy,” added Pochettino. “They’ve handled the pressure, they’re an outstanding side, and they have got support from a phenomenal group of fans. Pochettino, who previously managed both Paris Saint-Germain and his native Argentina, now believes La Albiceleste have “already shown why they’re favourites.
“Argentina have shown they can deal with the weight of a World Cup opening game.
They were so impressive.”
“Next for Lionel Messi and Argentina on June 22 is Austria, followed by Jordan on June 27 to complete Group J.”
