For more than three decades, Kannywood has remained one of Nigeria’s most influential regional film industries, producing hundreds of Hausa-language movies that enjoy loyal audiences across northern Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries.

Yet, despite its longevity, cultural relevance and large audience base, Kannywood continues to lag behind Nollywood in terms of commercial success, global visibility, production value and investment.

While Nollywood has evolved into one of the world’s largest film industries, attracting international streaming platforms, cinema releases, multinational sponsors and global recognition, Kannywood still faces structural challenges that have slowed its growth.

Industry stakeholders believe the issue extends far beyond filmmaking talent.

Funding Remains A Major Obstacle

One of the biggest challenges confronting Kannywood is limited access to funding.

Producing quality films requires significant financial investment for equipment, locations, costumes, post-production, marketing and distribution.

Kannywood Vs Nollywood: Why The Gap Keeps Growing

Many Kannywood producers often work with smaller budgets compared to their counterparts in Nollywood, making it difficult to compete in an increasingly sophisticated entertainment market.

Without strong financial backing, filmmakers are frequently forced to compromise on production quality or scale back ambitious projects that could attract wider audiences.

Unlike Nollywood, where private investors, brands and corporate organisations regularly finance productions, Kannywood has struggled to build a similar investment culture.

Limited Corporate Sponsorship

Corporate sponsorship has become an important driver of Nollywood’s expansion.

Banks, telecommunications companies, beverage brands and multinational corporations regularly partner with filmmakers through product placements, sponsorships and promotional campaigns.

These partnerships provide additional revenue streams that improve production quality while expanding marketing reach.

Kannywood has not enjoyed the same level of corporate confidence.

Many producers continue to rely largely on personal funding or small independent investors, limiting the industry’s ability to compete on a national and international level.

Distribution Challenges

The way films reach audiences has changed dramatically over the past decade.

Streaming platforms, cinema chains and digital distribution have transformed Nollywood, allowing producers to generate revenue from multiple channels.

Although Kannywood has increasingly embraced YouTube and online platforms, its distribution network remains less developed.

Many Hausa-language productions still depend primarily on regional audiences, reducing opportunities for international exposure and commercial expansion.

Language barriers also mean fewer productions receive subtitles or marketing campaigns capable of attracting non-Hausa-speaking viewers.

Global Visibility Gap

Nollywood has successfully positioned itself as a global entertainment brand.

Its films regularly feature on international streaming platforms, while Nigerian actors increasingly appear at major film festivals and global award ceremonies.

International collaborations have also helped expand Nollywood’s audience beyond Africa.

Kannywood, despite producing culturally rich stories, has yet to achieve comparable global visibility.

Industry observers believe stronger marketing strategies, international partnerships and multilingual distribution could help introduce Hausa-language cinema to broader audiences.

Perception And Investment

Another challenge frequently mentioned by industry stakeholders is the perception of entertainment as a business.

Many creative professionals believe investors in northern Nigeria have historically shown less interest in financing film projects compared to entrepreneurs in southern Nigeria.

This has limited opportunities for large-scale productions capable of competing commercially.

Greater private-sector participation could provide resources needed to improve production standards, create employment and expand the industry’s economic impact.

A Case Study From Uzee Usman

Actor and filmmaker Uzee Usman recently echoed many of these concerns during an appearance on The Morayo Show.

According to him, Kannywood possesses strong stories and talented filmmakers but lacks the financial support required to realise its full potential.

“Despite being around for a while and having good stories, I think the major issue affecting Kannywood is the lack of sponsorship and investment,” he said.

“Many northerners who are millionaires and politicians don’t really believe in or invest in the entertainment industry the way people in the South (Nollywood) do.”

Usman speaks from experience.

Although recognised as one of Kannywood’s leading actors, he has also worked extensively in Nollywood, giving him firsthand insight into the differences between both industries.

His career began in 2003 as a make-up artist before transitioning into filmmaking in 2013.

Over the years, he has appeared in acclaimed productions including Anikulapo, A Tribe Called Judah, Voiceless and Mustapha, while also producing award-winning Hausa-language films such as Oga Abuja and Maja.

His experience across both industries reinforces his argument that talent alone cannot sustain long-term growth without adequate investment.

Strong Foundations For Future Growth

Despite the challenges, Kannywood remains one of Africa’s most culturally significant film industries.

Its productions continue to preserve Hausa language, traditions and values while entertaining millions of viewers across northern Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

The industry also continues to produce talented actors, directors, writers and technicians capable of competing on larger platforms.

As digital streaming continues to remove geographical barriers, opportunities for expansion are increasing.

Industry stakeholders believe stronger investment, improved marketing, better distribution strategies and greater collaboration with international platforms could significantly transform Kannywood’s fortunes.

Rather than competing directly with Nollywood, many believe both industries can complement each other by showcasing Nigeria’s diverse cultures and storytelling traditions.

If financial support, corporate confidence and strategic partnerships continue to grow, Kannywood may yet achieve the wider recognition that many filmmakers believe it has deserved for years.
