There was a time when Big Brother Naija launch nights were not about fashion. The early seasons, particularly the premiere in 2006, were modest affairs. Housemates wore whatever they brought from home, and the wardrobe was functional rather than memorable. Fashion was not yet central to the show’s experience. But that has since changed.
Today, the BBNaija launch night is one of the biggest fashion events on the Nigerian calendar. Housemates now arrive looking like they are walking a red carpet, not a reality show stage. The fashion is discussed as much as the housemates themselves. And at the centre of that transformation is one man: Ebuka Obi-Uchendu.
The Early Seasons: When Fashion Wasn’t the Focus
In the early years, the show’s style was understated. A modest suit or a simple dress sufficed. Fashion wasn’t yet a tool for personal branding.
But even then, seeds were being planted. Viewers noticed style differences, and they began to associate fashion with personality. That silent shift would eventually redefine how Africa viewed reality television fashion.
The Turning Point: Ebuka Takes Over
Ebuka Obi-Uchendu took over as host in 2017, and with him came a shift in the show’s fashion culture. As a former housemate himself (he placed seventh in the 2006 season), Ebuka understood the show’s energy.
His style became a signature. Each launch night, viewers tuned in not just to meet the housemates, but to see what Ebuka would wear. The red carpet looks, the traditional agbadas, the bold suits—they all became talking points.

Season 4 (2019): The Year Fashion Arrived
By Season 4, the launch night had become a full-fledged fashion moment. Ebuka appeared in two different outfits during the two-hour show: a blazing suit and a traditional agbada.
The housemates also arrived in style. From CeeC’s power suits to Mercy Eke’s high-glam, fashion had become a language of influence. Strategic dressing started shaping narratives, building alliances, and swaying public opinion.
Designers took notice. Stylists became part of the housemates’ teams. And the show’s fashion evolution truly began.
Season 7 (2022): The Housemates Step Up
By the Level Up season, the housemates had fully embraced the fashion culture. The ladies turned up in glamorous ensembles, and each look had a story.
Allyson wore a strapless pink mini dress with silver strands draping around her hips. Bella brought drama in a black number with pointed winged sleeves and feathers. Beauty dazzled in a bright yellow gold ensemble. Phyna brought Afrocentric goodness in an Ankara crop top and maxi skirt, styled with a full Afro and colourful beads.
These looks sparked debates, launched trends, and even secured endorsement deals. The show’s fashion journey had become digital currency.
Season 10 (2025): The Tribute Era
Season 10 marked a turning point. Ebuka and his designer, ATAFO, used fashion to honour Nigerian legends. Over two opening nights, Ebuka served four looks, each paying tribute to an iconic figure.
Look 1: The Osuofia Tribute
Ebuka wore a denim jacket embellished with crystals, paired with wide-leg pink trousers. The look was inspired by Nkem Owoh’s character Osuofia. He shared a photo of himself in the suit next to a shot of Osuofia in the same style. “Inspired by legendary actor, comedian and singer, Nkem Owoh,” he wrote.
Look 2: The King Sunny Ade Tribute
The second look was a pink lace agbada with intricate white embroidery. Ebuka paid homage to the legendary juju musician, King Sunny Ade. The outfit was a testament to Nigeria’s art, craft, and cultural richness.
Look 3: The Prince Nico Mbarga Tribute
A two-piece suit printed with vintage newspaper clippings, honouring the Cameroonian-Nigerian highlife musician. It was a throwback to the 1970s, a defining era for Mbarga, whose hit “Sweet Mother” remains iconic.
Look 4: The Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh Tribute
Ebuka’s final look honoured Nigeria’s flamboyant former Finance Minister. A loose white top over a wine-and-cream George wrapper, a straw boater hat, coral beads, and a walking cane. He even had an assistant carry the train, perfectly replicating the chief’s legendary lifestyle.
Season 11 (2026): The Show Ya Sef Moment
The most recent season kicked off with the theme “Show Ya Sef” and a grand prize of ₦160 million. The launch night saw 24 housemates arrive in impeccable fashion—from Nigerian traditional attire to glittering cocktail dresses and avant-garde suits.
And as always, Ebuka set the standard.
He arrived in not one but two custom ATAFO looks. The first was a two-piece ombré suit in charcoal black and off-white, paired with oversized black square sunglasses and black patent boots.
The second was a fusion of traditional South-South royal menswear and high-fashion editorial drama: a metallic silver and black lattice-patterned sequin lace tunic, worn over a floor-length deep black velvet wrapper skirt. A midnight-black traditional cap with a crystal brooch, polished black bead strands, and a sleek umbrella carried as a ceremonial walking cane completed the look.
The Bigger Picture
What started as an afterthought has become one of the show’s defining features. BBNaija fashion is now a cultural phenomenon, influencing African youth, shaping online conversations, and creating fashion icons.
The launch night fashion is no longer just about the housemates. It also involves African designers, indigenous fabrics, and the celebration of Nigerian creativity. Each season, the runway gets bigger, the stories get deeper, and the stakes get higher.
