New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration has announced a $3 million emergency grant programme aimed at helping home-based childcare providers deal with unexpected expenses and avoid shutting down their services.

Under the initiative, about 500 family childcare providers will be eligible to apply for grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 this year. The funding is intended to assist providers facing emergencies such as damaged homes, broken appliances and urgent repairs.

Mamdani said home-based providers play a crucial role in the city’s childcare system and should not be left to deal with unexpected financial challenges alone.

“Home-based childcare providers are the backbone of our childcare system. They should not have to shoulder emergencies on their own. When a refrigerator breaks, a pipe bursts or a storm damages a home, families can lose access to the care they rely on overnight,” the mayor said.

“This microgrant program is about making sure government shows up before a crisis becomes a closure. It’s one more step toward building a childcare system that values every provider and every family.”

There are more than 6,000 family childcare providers across New York City, according to a report by the New School’s Center for New York City Affairs. Many operate with limited financial resources and earn a median wage of about $6 an hour.

The providers, who are predominantly women of colour, care for more than 100,000 children and are expected to play an important role in Mamdani’s plan to expand access to universal childcare.

The city issued a request for proposals on Friday to find an organisation that will administer the microgrant programme. The administration said it expects the initiative, which was developed in consultation with childcare providers and advocacy groups, to begin before the end of the year.

Gladys Jones, founder and CEO of ECE on the Move, an organisation representing early childhood educators, welcomed the initiative.

“When we invest in providers, we protect children, families and entire communities,” Jones said.

Childcare services in New York City operate across different settings, including providers’ homes, schools and commercial facilities. Families may pay directly for care, while others receive support through government subsidies, vouchers or contracts.

However, the fragmented system has left many home-based providers among the lowest-paid workers in the sector, while unexpected repair costs can further threaten their ability to remain open.

Councilmember Jennifer Gutierrez, chair of the Committee on Early Childhood Education, said emergency expenses could have serious consequences for providers and the families who depend on them.

“We know how a single maintenance issue in their home can impact not only the service they provide, but their livelihood too,” Gutierrez said.

City officials said all family childcare providers will be eligible to seek assistance, including those without a city contract to provide free preschool services for toddlers.

The $3 million programme will be financed through the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, a nonprofit organisation that supports public-private partnerships.
