Google has emerged as the successful bidder for a substantial collection of Spirit Airlines’ internal data and software, offering $10 million for assets it intends to use for product development and artificial intelligence training.

The deal, however, still requires approval from a US bankruptcy judge before it can be completed.

Court documents show that the assets include employee emails, Microsoft Teams conversations, spreadsheets, calendars and information related to areas such as airline operations, marketing and workplace productivity. The collection reportedly contains about 100 million emails and 500 million Teams messages.

Google has indicated that the data could support the development and improvement of its products and AI systems by providing access to information generated through real-world business activities.

The technology giant said the acquisition does not include customers’ personal information or credit card details. The data must also undergo de-identification before being handed over to Google to remove personally identifiable information.

Passenger records and Spirit Airlines’ loyalty programme data are also excluded from the transaction.

Google secured the assets after competing against AI data company Mercor, which reportedly offered $7.5 million. The successful bid followed an initial $5 million offer from Google during the bankruptcy auction.

The sale is part of efforts to dispose of Spirit Airlines’ remaining digital and business assets following the US low-cost carrier’s shutdown earlier in 2026.

Spirit entered bankruptcy proceedings as part of its financial difficulties, with attorneys overseeing the case continuing to sell off assets belonging to the airline.

The proposed transaction is scheduled to come before the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York on August 19 for approval.
