Manchester United came back from behind at Old Trafford to clinch their first Premier League win of the season under Michael Carrick against Ipswich Town with a 5-2 thrashing.
Ipswich’s initial performance was strong, and Leif Davis scored first at the far post after the move of Abdul Fatawu moved down the right side; he opened up room and managed to cross to the United box.
United equalised before half-time with Captain Bruno Fernandes sending the ball into the near corner, when it had been fed to him through Matheus Cunha on a rapid counter.
United turned up the heat at the start of the second half and took the lead when Harry Maguire’s attempt was deflected from a Jacob Greaves challenge and found its target.
Fernandes extended the scoring in his own account and from the penalty spot when Greaves took down Cunha in the United box; the Portugal international took a penalty against Kjell Scherpen, sending Scherpen the wrong way.
Within minutes, he then went on to complete the hat-trick when getting involved quickly following Kobi Mainoo and Bryan Mbeumo’s attempts. He provided the goal for Mbuemo to Chip Scherpen 5-1, bouncing off the frame first, and finishing its line. Ipswich did snatch late in the game with Chuba Akpom, Julio Enciso robbing possession from LichaMartinez.
In victory, United came off a run of 3 games without a win against any new sides, and Carrick grabbed his 9th out of 10 home games.
It was Fernandes’ first league treble this season, going back to the opening league match of the 21-22 season.
