Mauricio Pochettino backs his former club to compete for the Premier League title with Arsenal, despite dropping three points last Sunday.
Last Sunday, Chelsea lost 2-1 to top-spot contenders Arsenal and, after making so many new signings this past summer, Pochettino does believe Chelsea could take the league title with new boss Xabi Alonso in charge.
Poch backs Chelsea to compete
Speaking on Sky Sports, Pochettino claimed that although Chelsea and Tottenham will be contenders in the race for the Premier League title, Arsenal and Mikel Arteta will also continue their fight for the top spot. “I think so. I think so. Of course they are disappointed after the defeat against Arsenal, but I think we need to give time to Xabi [Alonso],” he told Sky Sports. “Arsenal is a more consistent team and, for me, Mikel [Arteta] is the best coach in the Premier League today.
It’s going to be tough to beat them.
But I think Chelsea and Tottenham can be a contender for the Premier League.”
Chelsea went into their league clash with Arsenal having won their opening two games, and they sit just three points behind the league leaders going into Sunday’s match. Chelsea’s priority will be Champions League qualification; however, their attack still promises so much, as proven against Leeds in the 6-3 Carabao Cup tie they won last Tuesday, which the dynamic attacking combination of Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Joao Pedro impressed, with Palmer and Rogers particularly influential during their large victory.
Pochettino’s prediction will surely be tested in the coming weeks, as Alonso begins to try and bridge the gap between Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.
